model s fire in the state of tennessee. phil lebeau has details on that one. phil? >> and, bill, we're still trying to get exact details about what happened with this tesla model s fire. take a look at these pictures provided to us by the tennessee highway patrol. these are shots of the model s after the fire was put out. the driver was uninjured. got out of the car. he apparently drove over a tow hitch in the road. that punctured the battery compartment. by the way, as you're looking at this, this is the third model s fire in the last six weeks. and for tesla shares, it has added to what has been a terrible couple of days. in fact, this is the worst two day drop for tesla shares in more than three years. tesla says it is sending a team of investigators to tennessee to investigate what happened. as for the federal government, the national highway traffic safety administration tells us that it will contact the local authorities who are looking into the incident to determine if there are vehicle safety implications that merit agency action. tesla has sold more than 19,000 model s vehi

's earnings. phil lebeau has been looking at that. this has been the momentum stock of the year. what did they deliver on earnings? >> it was better than what the street was expecting. 12 cents per share versus the street expecting 11 cents a share. there was a whisper number of 17 cents a share. some will be disappointed. when you look at revenues, light of what many of expecting coming into $431 million -- excuse me, a little above. $603 million versus $553 million. then the question of deliveries of the model s. this was the crucial number, maria. for the third quarter, tesla delivering 5500 model s vehicles. many on wall street were expecting closer to 5700 or 5750. keep in mind, tesla's own guidance was for 5,000 deliveries so they'll say, listen, we exceeded it by 500. again, it's all about expectations. 5,500 model s delivered last quarter. they did beat the street by a penny, earning 12 cents a share. back to you. >> the stock is -- well, initially traded down. looks like it's bouncing on that, on the chart. really an active chart tonight on tesla. want to get straight to the anal

, our own phil lebeau with more details on that. >> reporter: good morning, kate. we're here at the l.a. auto so where as they get ready to open the show, a lot of talk is about what's happening with tesla. a few minutes ago, this tweet from elon musk, the ceo of tesla. he says why does a tesla fire with no injury get more media headlines than 100 gas car fires that kill hundreds of people per year? what he's referencing is the fact that the national highway traffic safety administration has opened a formal investigation into the model s battery fires. in doing so the agency said the investigation was prompted by recent incidents in washington state and tennessee that resulted in battery fires due to undercarriage strikes with roadway debris. nobody was injured, nobody was killed in either of the tesla model s fires and tesla this morning said it asked the national highway traffic safety association to launch a formal investigation. it brings up the question, will there be a rrl? this is what elon musk said at the deal book contract just last week when andrew ross sorkin asked him abo

. cnbc's phil lebeau joins us from chicago. three big stories that fall in your area, phil. first boeing soliciting bids for its new 77 x production site. who's in contention sp. >> it's too early to say any one location has an edge over others, although there are natural advantage certain locations have. here are a few of the cities we've confirmed independently as well talking with sources in the running for the landing the 777 x location. seattle, washington, because of the facilities there, long beach, salt lake city, huntsville, alabama, and the boeing facility in charleston. keep this in mind, boeing says it will not negotiate with the machinist union out there in seattle which is interesting because if they were to work out a deal at the last second, you wouldn't see anything develop, sue. but as it is right now boeing says it is moving forward and will make a decision some time early next year about a 777 location. i know that you asked the ceo about that last time you talked to him. very interesting. boeing advising airline about the risk of engine icing problems on the 747 and

beating the streets by a penny. company's delivery numbers were lower than expect. phil lebeau joins us. >> reporter: this is a third quarter where they reported better as their own guidance but not as good as any were expecting. you mentioned delivery. for the third quarter they delivered 5,500 model s, some were talking about 5,700 or 5,800. there was some of the disappointment. the gross margin, however, at 21% is a little higher than most on wall street were expecting and now they're planning to deliver 21,500 this year. and deliveries are being increased to europe and to a certain extent pulling back a bit in terms of delivering here in the u.s. what about china, who many view as a great growth market? that will start in the first quarter of next year and already elon musk is saying they're seeing great interest -- they're more on the supply side than on the demand side. >> we're supply constrained not demand constrained. we're working hard to address the construction constraint. the thing that people quite don't get is we're different in that fundamental way from other car compani

. >> we are getting numbers on auto sales. chrysler already came out with a miss. phil lebeau has ford numbers. >> reporter: these are slightly below the estimate, overall ford for the month of october, an increase of sales of 14%. again, the street was expecting 15.5%. a couple of numbers stand out here. the best retail sales for the month of october since 2004. we usually don't focus on just one month. that is interesting. best retail sales since 2004. the f-series, it continues to be just incredible. up 63,000 in terms of total sales, up 13% for the month. that is the sixth straight month with f-series sales of greater than 60,000. guys back to you. >> phil, thank you for that. >> the stock does anything. >> i was going to ask you, you know, we've seen some of the whole sale inventory numbers showing stockpiling at auto dealers. some of the loans are stretched out. >> gm stories there about no deals, deals, i think if you don't offer these deals, you got to stay on that treadmill. these stocks have stalled. i don't know why. i'm saying that it's not as easy because europe is turning

on the verge of an unprecedented deal that will get the company through the bulk of its orders. phil lebeau has the details out of chicago. good morning, phil. >> reporter: good morning. this is important for boeing and machinists. they're saying are we're sure we're going to have labor peace through the rest of the decade? that's what it looks like as they're close to signing a deal. for boeing as they close in on this deal, the labor contract, if they agree to a new one, would ensure the 777x, that it would largely be assembled in the puget sound area. what does boeing get out of this deal? a new contract that would run through at least 2020 and perhaps several years after that, ensuring labor peace for boeing for several years, which is going to be critical as they go through the rest of this decade. you've got to go back to 2008, the last time that boeing had to deal with a strike by the machinist union. when you look at boeing's back log, the important thing is boeing wants the certainty about the fixed labor costs for more than 4,700 planes. this is a all-time record. the value, $345 bill
